It’s called that, so kids can play on it at school and not be suspect. As far as I know, it has some math games and some math lessons (I remember the one on lattice multiplication in particular). Of course, most are just regular games.
Also there are a bunch of ways to exploit it as well:
- Resize the Minecraft window so that it looks like it’s on Cool Math Games
- Make the .swf file that the game page uses redirect to the .swf file for a game on another site.
I love Cool Math Games.

It is Cool and has a few math games! The website started with math games, but as it grew, a larger variety of games ended up on the website.
As you can see in the navigation, there is a category called numbers that has math-related games, but either way, my kids love this site and play regularly, and I’ve just found myself playing the new game on there called “Lost Joe”.

If adults hate math, you can imagine the experiences of kids still being introduced to its concepts. The question then is: Why do kids hate math? Keep in mind that the disdain for the subject often starts in childhood.
First, math is something other than something that can be done passively and impulsively, such as learning English in an environment where it is the first language. Kids must put plenty of time, effort and energy into learning math concepts, developing the skills for solving math problems, and advancing said skills to the next level.
In most kids, concentration and focus are not their strongest suits, especially with technology (i.e., video games) at hand. The good news is that kids’ affinity for video games can also be harnessed for their good via cool math games, but more on that later.
Second, math has no real-world applications except for basic operations (i.e., addition and subtraction). Kids also hate that math has a set of rigid rules that allow little opportunity for imaginative discourse, thus, their idea that math is a dull subject.
Math has a language of its own that kids will not initially understand. Teachers must then simplify the jargon so that everyday applications can be made.

There are lots of games that have been banned, but I’ll go with a basic.
Our school blocked the dinosaur game. The one that you can play when there is no internet.
All you have to do is turn the Wi-Fi off, press space, or click on the dinosaur to start. You jump over the cacti, trying to get a high score.
On the school computers, it doesn’t work now; instead, it shows some meteors coming at your dinosaur and giving you a message that the administrator blocked the game.
I miss the dinosaur game, especially on the rare days when the school’s internet is down, and you have nothing to do.

You need to have a high level of mathematical skill to play our games, and even then, it’s highly unlikely that you could get the highest score.
Being good at math requires a certain mindset. It takes a particular kind of brain—someone who sees patterns and connections readily, thinks in numbers fluidly and loves math for mathematics’ sake—to become deeply fluent in all sorts of systems and patterns found everywhere in the factual world.
We’re going heavy on arithmetic skills this week (and next), but we have yet to try too hard with other subjects like algebra or geometry.
